Melatonin is a hormone secreted in the body by the pineal gland in the brain, and its synthesis and release are stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light. Melatonin is responsible for maintaining the body's circadian rhythm, or in other words, a person's internal clock. This internal clock plays an essential role when we fall asleep and when we wake up.
