What is Posatex?

  • Posatex contains three active substances: orbifloxacin, mometasone furoate monohydrate and posaconazole.
  • Posatex is a suspension of ear drops, white to whitish.
  • It is available in a 17.5 ml bottle for dogs.

What is Posatex used for?

  • Posatex is used to treat dogs that have acute or recurrent episodes of ear infections (otitis externa).
  • It is administered once a day for seven days. The number of ear drops administered depends on the weight of the dog and varies between 2 and 8.
  • The inside of the ear should be cleaned and dried before treatment.

How does Posatex work?

In dogs, ear infections can be caused by bacteria or fungi. Infections can often cause inflammation of the ear (s) (redness, swelling or itching). Two of the active substances in Posatex, orbifloxacin and posaconazole, act against the cause of the infection, while the third, mometasone furoate monohydrate, acts on inflammation.

Orbifloxacin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. It works by blocking an enzyme called "DNA gyrase", which is important because it does not allow bacteria to make copies of DNA. By blocking "DNA gyrase", orbifloxacin prevents bacteria from producing DNA and proteins and growing, leading to bacterial death.

Posaconazole is an antifungal that belongs to the triazole group. It works by preventing the formation of ergosterol, which is an important part of the fungal cell wall. Without ergosterol, the fungus is destroyed or prevented from spreading.

Mometasone furoate monohydrate is a steroid that is a type of substance that helps reduce inflammation.
